Introduction to feminism- Media Magazine MM55: The Fourth Wave?

1)  Networked feminism  aims to tackle  social equality  issues found both on, using, modern technology. There have been  campaigns, blogs and hashtags  used. Ideologies and communities have come back through the roots of the internet. Twitter is a large contributing social networking site used-  #WomenAgainstFeminism and #YesAllWomen . It is a problem because there is new technology and social media platforms. In the media  feminists  are still seen as campaigners, like the  Suffragettes , who tied themselves to rails etc. One complication is that it is only partially understood due to ideologies becoming blurred. They are still characterized as  'man-haters'. 2) The  Four Waves of Feminism : First wave : early 20th century, suffragette movement (right to vote) Second wave :1960s-1990s, reproductive rights (pill), abortion, equal pay. Third wave :1990s-present, empowerment, reclaiming of femininity (high heels, sexuality etc.) Fourth wave ?:2010-ongoing, use of new techno

Introduction to feminism:Case study- Everyday Sexism

1) Laura Bates started the Everyday Sexism project because she realised that it was a  recurring  issue in her and almost every other women's life. Until speaking out about her experiences with others about the  sexual harassment  she gets, Laura thought it was normal due to everyone shutting her down and saying that women are equal now. However, she researched and found information that contrasts with the statement of 'women being equal' and decided to make website which enables people, men and women, from around the world to share their experiences. 2) The project links to the concept of  post-feminism  because it  unveils  the different forms of  sexual harassment  women get on a daily basis and how they experience this during a normal days  routine,  e.g. at their workplace or on their way home. In  Western societies  things are still  developing  and they still live in  patriarchy.  So  feminism  is needed in order for women to have  equal rights  and allow their  vo

Representation theory- 'My Name Is Khan'

1)  Representation  is an important concept in media studies. This is because the word  representation  holds a clue to its importance. When we see a person, place, object or idea represented in the media text, it has in some way been  mediated  by the very act of representation. The media stands between the object and what we see. 2)The photograph of Kate Middleton has been  manipulated  with by the media, it is a  re-presentation  of what she really looks like. The media can take  advantage  of her pose and present this to the audience in a certain way, as they are able to manipulate and change the angle, lighting and timing of the pose to present a different view to the audience, it is also  heavily edited . In the first image, the media presents her in an  inaccurate  way, as it portrays her as  negative , whereas in the second image she looks  respectful. 3)All media products have a  specific function  which will impact on the representations they  construct . Representation an introduction- trailer 1

1) Men Women Teenagers Girls Americans 2) This trailer shows a  dominant representation  of men. This is because the girls father has a comic role of looking out and being  protective  of his daughter and by having control of the situation. Additionally, it's men who have the role of being brave and strong, the  hero . Also, the men who have kidnapped the daughter are a dominant representation because it shows how it's men who have  power  and are superior. Women are also a  dominant representation . We can see how the girls mother is  helpless  as she doesn't know what to do, we can see how she is more emotional and feels weaker, this reinforces the stereotype of women as  inferior  than men. We can see that there is a dominant representation of the girl/teenager. This stereotype is reinforced because we can see how the teenager is independent and not listening to her parents, but she is  vulnerable  when she sees the men. 3) The stereotype of women being the

Representation an introduction- trailer 2

1)   Women (Mothers’)   Youth   Men Americans   Police 2) This trailer shows an alternative representation of men. As we can see the protagonist has autism, which makes him inferior to other people as it’s his weakness. However, this trailer does show a dominant representation of men because of the way the police act, they are in control and have authority over the protagonist. Also, this trailer shows dominant representation of women, as we can see that she is a mother and is very protective of her son, she is very affectionate. However, this trailer does subvert the representations of women as it shows the heroine as the breadwinner of the family as she is the main provider of income- she runs her own business and is independent. There are both dominant representations of youth. The dominant would be that they teenage kids are friends and go to each other’s houses etc. This trailer shows a dominant representation of Americans. This is because we can
