Representation an introduction- trailer 2

1)

  •  Women (Mothers’)
  •  Youth
  •  Men
  • Americans
  •  Police

2) This trailer shows an alternative representation of men. As we can see the protagonist has autism, which makes him inferior to other people as it’s his weakness. However, this trailer does show a dominant representation of men because of the way the police act, they are in control and have authority over the protagonist. Also, this trailer shows dominant representation of women, as we can see that she is a mother and is very protective of her son, she is very affectionate. However, this trailer does subvert the representations of women as it shows the heroine as the breadwinner of the family as she is the main provider of income- she runs her own business and is independent. There are both dominant representations of youth. The dominant would be that they teenage kids are friends and go to each other’s houses etc. This trailer shows a dominant representation of Americans. This is because we can see how they are judgmental about the protagonist because he has dyslexia and see him as a terrorist as he doesn’t fit in society. They are seen as patriarchist, and view ‘Khan’ as a threat. Moreover, there is a dominant representation of the Police in this trailer because the American police are known for picking on people of ethnic minority background, they suspect ‘Khan’ as a terrorist.

3) The stereotype of women, in particular, mothers being overly affectionate, the stereotype of Americans’ as patriarchists, the stereotype of foreigners being dodgy (Muslims being terrorists).

4) The trailer may alienate Muslim people (Asians), because they portray ‘Khan’ as someone illegal and as a terrorist, they may find this offending and disrespectful. The trailer may offend American people, as some like to be known as non-racist and equal, in this trailer American people turn again Muslims.

5) It's easier for the audience to understand films/texts which use stereotypes, this is because it's how society works and it's the way they view things. By not using stereotypes the texts/films may be less appealing as it contradicts the societies views.
