Blog task: binary oppositions and ideology
1) One example of binary opposition I can suggest from watching this clip is immigrants vs British people. This is clearly illustrated as Nigel argues the point about overcrowding as a result of immigration and the general quality of life has gone down. Another binary opposition suggested from this clip is rich vs poor. This is seen when Nigel makes the point about the upper classes being at a disadvantage because of overcrowding, but Russell makes the point about how money is not being distributed in an equal way and that the poor are also at a disadvantage because of this. Furthermore, another binary opposition in this clip is immigration vs corruption. Russell mentions how people are worried about the shortages of resources, taking away jobs, housing, not paying taxes because of immigrants, but Nigel is the one who is really to blame because politicians are corrupt. One other binary opposition displayed in this clip is racism vs anti-racism. Nigel's whole idea about not wanting immigrants to come to the UK makes him seem like he has racists views and issues with foreigners and only thinks about money, whereas Russell could be seen as anti-racist because he is for immigration. Also, working class vs immigration is another binary opposition. The working classes are being hit the hardest due to immigration because of the sudden change in society. Moreover, there is binary opposition between Russell's appearance and Nigel's appearance. Russell is dressed up as more casual, he has no tie, top button is undone and has long hair. Whereas, Nigel has dressed up more smarter, he has a tie and a smarter hairstyle. One other binary opposition could be disable vs able, this is seen when Russell talks about how unprivileged they are as they get no help or support, but others disagree.
2) One ideology that is displayed in this clip is that the privileged end up having more power in society than the less privileged which puts them at a disadvantage. Another ideology is Nigel's capitalist views coming across in his answers. Also, Russell's claims about those in power being corrupt is another ideology as he says how the working classes suffer because the higher classes and more privileged people, like bankers, are taking all the money and it's not equally distributed. Another ideology in this clip is that Nigel believes that immigration has bought issues that are in this country such as a shortage of school place, housing and GP services, and overcrowding and congestion on the roads.
My Own Clip-
Emily Ratajkowski: Is the Raunchy Video Empowering to Women?
1) One binary opposition that could be suggested while watching this clip is empowerment vs disempowerment of women. This is seen when piers argues the point about how 'playing' with spaghetti is meant to empower women, but the lady in black says that she is allowed to expose her body and be in charge of her body..Another binary opposition that can be seen in this video is feminism vs sexual objectification. Emily is displaying her body parts by making raunchy videos, however people say that it is her body and she can do whatever. Another binary opposition is society vs feminists. This is because feminists are being judged for empowering women by exposing their bodies, but some others disagree with them and treat them badly as a result. In addition another binary opposition could be the patriarchy vs feminism. Susan argues the point that the raunchy video is a way to crush patriarchy, whereas Piers disagrees.
2) One ideology that is displayed in this clip is the idea of crushing patriarchy. Feminists believe that women should be equally treated and therefore allowed to be in charge of their own bodies, whether they want to expose them or keep them veiled, however Piers believes that exposing her body isn't bringing any equality or empowering women. Another ideologydisplayed in this clip is the image of women in society. Many people in society believe that women should have a comic role of being inferior, but Emily goes against the typical stereotype.
