Media Factsheet 76: News Values

1)
  • Conflict: Afghan conflict, US carried out its first air strike in response to the Taliban.
  • Progress: Switzerland voted in favour of LGBTQ+ protection bill shows progress because it shows that the community is becoming widely accepted across the globe.
  • Disaster: The coronavirus! A current global issue which has lead to many deaths.
  • Consequence: London knife crime has increased fear among society.
  • Prominence: Phillip Scofield coming out as gay has caused a lot of controversy. Many people support his decision, while others see it as 'unfaithful'.
  • Novelty: Kobe Bryant killed in a helicopter crash, along with his daughter and 5 others.
2) The example used in the factsheet is of a British servicewoman who died as a result of an Afghan bomb blast. This is an appropriate example  to gain prominent coverage because it reflects various news values. The fact that she is British relates to familiarity because the British army is apart of out culture.

3) Gatekeeping:  the process of filtering information prior to dissemination.  This process is usually done via the editor, but the gatekeeping process could be seen to be more than simply an editor choosing one story over another, it could also refer to how journalist select certain lines of questioning, or use some words over others to describe people and event. In general, gatekeeping is about opening or closing the channels of communication and, in the case of news, it is a way for news institution to control the ‘flow’ of information passed on to the audience.

4) Six ways bias can be created in the news:
  1. Selection and omission
  2. Placement
  3. Headline
  4. Photos,captions and camera angles
  5. Names and titles
  6. Choice of words
5) They see themselves as raw-sources of information. Its only agenda is to bring about 'transparency' and 'freedom of speech'.

6) Activity:
  1. What does this reveal about how Sky views Twitter as a news source? They see them as a major source of news as it often acts as a primary source of information.
  2. What does it say about how news is being produced? News is being created online. The increase in citizen journalism.
  3. What role does the audience have in this process? Audiences consume and create news.
  4. Why might this be a problem for journalistic standards? You don't need to be specially trained or qualified.
7) I believe that the news values are still dominant in reflecting the news stories. However, I think because of the increase in new and digital media there is a lot of fake news going around which makes some values less important than others.

8)
  • Unambiguity- many news stories aren't 100% clear, they always use words like 'suspected' or 'claims'. Also the rise in new and digital media has blurred the lines between what is true and what isn't so its hard to distinguish.
  •  Visual impact- news stories/pictures undergo mediation so many images have been edited to look a certain way.
