"Teens care about the news. They just don’t like traditional media."

2) Why Teens Are Creating Their Own News Outlets

3) Summary (inc. quotes):

  •  Written by Rainsford Stauffer in August 2019.
  •  Interview by schoolgirl Olivia Seltzer in 2016, she realised there was a shift in values at school after the election. Many people in her class had parents who were immigrants so politics was a sensitive area for them.
  • “Traditional news sources are primarily written by and geared toward an older demographic, and unfortunately, they don’t always connect to my generation.”- suggesting there is a gap between generations.
  • Stats about how many newspapers have declined in 2004.
  • She launched her own website in 2017 known as "theCramm"-   a daily look at major stories from around the world, distilled into a newsletter that lands in email and text inboxes each weekday.- however now uses text newsletters.
  • “unbiased point of view with the news.”-she reads all thenews stories and wakes up at 5am to do so.
  •  Works with the "CrammFam" to make her stories more “engaging, informative, and easily digestible.”
  • Outlines the positives of young people and social media- "78% of American teens ages 13 to 17 say it’s important to them to follow current events."- they become "civily engaged"
  •  "Sofia Frazer, a 16-year-old activist, runs the account @dailydoseofwokeness, which has over 30,000 followers and features story highlights on Sudan, mental health, and the 2020 presidential candidates, among others."
  • “Basically, Instagram is an easy and accessible way for many young people to get engaged with what is happening in our world right now,” “People also tend to reply back to stories with questions or actually wanting to start an open discussion,” she says. “I’ve gotten some really thoughtful insights from people replying to stories.”
  • "There’s a news-literacy element to young people launching their own media outlets too, which is particularly important in an era where disinformation and misinformation seep into our online worlds. "
  • “My ultimate goal with theCramm is to create a media source the likes of BBC, NBC, and CNN, but for young people.”

4) How or why this story appeals to an audience:

  • Audience pleasures: younger people have satisfaction they can contribute and understand the worl of politics and news in general.
  • Diversion: reading the news stories and discussing
  • Personal identity: "CrammFam"- they become a part of a family, a community.
  • Personal relationships: craeting a bond with one another.
  • Surveillence: understand a complicated world, being able to contribute to issues which impact them.

5) This story reflects the values and ideologies of Teen Vogue because it shows how communities are built within and to make a point about something- they see themselves as a movement so this idea of politics and younger generations is something they would do as they "push the boundaries". Targets their audience, liberal and free minded, iundependent women.

I would say that this isn't quality journalism, I would go more towards clickbait because its about targeting the youth audience.
